“We think it’s a good idea to do this because it’ll give them some time to do their investigation,” Mr. Siegel said.
“They’ll see if they can find anything.”
The FBI’s focus on Silk Road was a major focus during the election season, as the drug market was one of the most scrutinized topics in U.S. politics.
While the FBI has not publicly linked Silk Road to the recent shooting of two men in Portland, Ore., the agency has said it is investigating the case and is considering charges.
The agency did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Silk Road’s two main users are the Tor anonymizing network, which provides anonymity to users and other users, and the dark web, which is a network of computers that do not require users to reveal their IP addresses or passwords to browse.
The Silk Road users’ anonymity can be used to hide identities and conduct criminal activity.
Silk Lane’s anonymity was also a point of contention in the 2016 presidential campaign.
The FBI seized a cache of about 200,000 files from the dark market in August and released them to journalists.
